The Rise and Decline of Skype

Launched in 2003 by entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, Skype revolutionized the way people communicated by offering free voice and video calls over the internet. Its user-friendly interface and cost-effective solutions led to rapid adoption worldwide. Recognizing its potential, eBay acquired Skype in 2005 for $2.6 billion, aiming to integrate it into its e-commerce ecosystem. Data Migration: Users can migrate their contacts, chat history, and group conversations to Microsoft Teams. This process is designed to be straightforward, with data automatically transferring upon the user's first login to Teams using their Skype credentials. 

Access to Teams: Skype users will be able to access the free tier of Microsoft Teams, which offers a range of features including chat, video calls, and collaborative tools.

Subscription and Credits: Existing Skype subscriptions will remain active until their next renewal date. Users with Skype credits can utilize them through the Skype web portal or within Teams for calling functionalities. 

Data Export Options: For users opting not to transition to Teams, Microsoft provides tools to export chat histories and contacts, ensuring they retain their data for future reference.
